SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES - MEN

Please note that from 8.4.2025 all sampling for infectious diseases will take place in the newly opened GHC Genetics sampling centre at Poliklinika Prosek. Detailed information can be found HERE.

The first symptoms most often appear as some discomfort, discharge, rash or sores in the genital area or at the point of entry of the infection. Untreated sexually transmitted infections can cause serious health complications, cancer, infertility, affect the course of pregnancy or cause permanent damage to the fetus. The most common bacterial infections include gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia, while viral infections include HIV (AIDS), human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes, hepatitis B, C and others.

Most sexually transmitted diseases are highly infectious, and although some may be asymptomatic for some time, they pose a significant risk not only to the infected person but also to their intimate contacts. Risky sexual behaviour and promiscuity are the main reasons behind the increase in STDs. A major risk is posed by asymptomatic individuals who may not know they have the disease, yet spread it further. It is therefore essential that particular care be taken to prevent the infection and behave responsibly or to get tested regularly. The tests are suitable for all sexually active people, especially those with risky behaviour or contacts, even if they have no symptoms of the disease. All tests can be performed anonymously.

Human papillomavirus (HPV)

A microbiological examination focused on the 24 most high-risk HPV types can detect the infection and its associated risks before pathological changes occur in the body or the first symptoms appear, significantly contributing to the early initiation of appropriate treatment.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most widespread sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Certain types of papillomaviruses can cause both malignant and benign tumors of the cervix, genitals, head, and neck, while others, for example, cause genital warts.

HPV is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person via mucous membranes and microtraumas of the skin, most commonly as a result of sexual intercourse. The clinical manifestations of the infection are highly variable, typically affecting the genital and anal areas, but it can also involve other mucosal regions such as the mouth, nose, conjunctiva, and throat. In some individuals, however, the infection may be entirely asymptomatic.

Our test detects 18 high-risk (HR) and 12 low-risk (LR) HPV types, including the highly oncogenic HPV 16 and HPV 18, which are responsible for up to 70% of cervical cancer cases. The presence of the virus does not automatically indicate cancer, but it calls for more frequent monitoring of the patient's health to detect any potential tumor growth at an early stage.

You will receive the result within 3 working days.

Syphilis

Microbiological examination for the detection of a sexually transmitted disease. Syphilis, also known as lues, is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the  Treponema pallidum bacteria.

Although transmission of the disease occurs most often through sexual contact, mother-to-foetus transmission is also possible. With early detection, the congenital form can be successfully prevented with appropriate treatment. Typical symptoms are swollen lymph nodes, ulcer at the site of entry of the infection (genitalia, anus mouth), and rash. The analysis is performed from a blood sample taken.

You will receive the result within 5 working days.

Herpes (HSV)

Microbiological examination for the detection of a sexually transmitted disease. Herpes simplex infection is caused by the HSV1 and HSV2 viruses. It is transmitted by contact with an infected person - by saliva or sexual intercourse, and in the case of an infected pregnant woman, mother-to-child transmission can occur during childbirth.

A typical symptom of a herpes infection is the development of cold sores. HSV1 causes cold sores mainly on the face, HSV2 is the most common cause of genital herpes. The specimen for analysis is collected by swabbing the genitals, rectum or throat.

You will receive the result within 5 working days.

Herpes (HSV) - IgM + IgG antibody test

Test for the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) in blood serum. The test is done to determine whether a person has been or is infected with one or both types of herpes simplex virus. Specific IgM class antibodies are always associated with early production, are detectable as early as 1 week after infection, and persist for about 6 weeks.

IgG antibodies appear 2 to 3 weeks (but sometimes several months) after the primary infection. After infection, IgG antibodies persist for life. The test can be used to determine active infection (IgM positivity) and to distinguish primary infection (IgM+, IgG-). The analysis is performed from a blood sample.

You will receive the result within 5 working days.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea

Microbiological examination for the detection of a sexually transmitted disease. Chlamydial infections and gonorrhoea are among the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Chlamydial infection is caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria.

It is transmitted through sexual contact and if the infected woman is pregnant, the infection can be transmitted to the newborn during childbirth. Typical symptoms include urinary discomfort, discharge and pain during intercourse. Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is transmitted through sexual intercourse and from mother to child during childbirth. It is manifested by purulent, itchy inflammation and discharge. A sample for analysis is taken by swabbing the genitals, rectum or throat. Women can self-collect using a special self-collection kit.

You will receive the result within 5 working days.

Chlamydia antibodies

Serological determination of antibodies. Acute infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is characterized by a predominance of IgA antibodies within 2-4 weeks after infection. After 68 weeks, specific IgG antibodies begin to form.

In acute chlamydial infections, the detection of IgA antibodies is an important diagnostic feature, but in recurrent or chronic infections, IgA antibodies are present at very low levels or not at all. The analysis is performed on a blood sample.

You will receive the result within 5 working days.

HIV resistance

Genetic analysis determines the organism's resistance to infection and microbiological examination. Although the HIV virus is highly contagious, its transmission requires the presence of certain receptors in the body, particularly the CCR5 receptor, which largely influences whether you will contract the virus during a high-risk contact or not. Mutations of this receptor cause resistance to HIV.

The test can be taken approximately 4 weeks after exposure or a high-risk contact. Depending on the selected test, the results can either determine your resistance to the infection, confirm if you are HIV positive, assess the prognosis, or recommend an appropriate treatment approach.

HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, is primarily transmitted through blood and the exchange of bodily fluids, but also from mother to child and through shared injection needles. The likelihood of HIV transmission depends on various factors, including the type of contact, the viral load of the infected person, and, last but not least, an individual’s genetic makeup.

For the virus to enter a cell, specific receptors must be present on its surface to facilitate its entry. Examples of such receptors include CCR5 and CXCR4. Mutations in these receptors can prevent viral entry into the cell, leading to resistance to HIV infection and, in the case of infection, a better prognosis.

You will receive the result within 5 working days.

Proof of HIV infection

Microbiological testing to determine the presence of HIV infection can be performed as early as 2-3 weeks after infection/risk contact based on the detection of HIV p24 antigen in the blood.

HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is transmitted mainly through blood and body fluid exchange, but also from mother to child and by sharing needles. The likelihood of transmitting HIV infection depends on many factors, including the type of contact, the viral load of the infected person and, last but not least, our genetic make-up.
